Department of Mechatronics and Biomedical Engineering

The increasing demand for Biomedical Engineers is linked to society’s general shift towards everyday utilization of machinery and technology in all aspects of life. The combination of engineering principles with biological knowledge to address medical needs has contributed to the development of revolutionary and life-saving concepts such as; artificial organs, surgical robots, advanced prosthetics, new pharmaceutical drugs, kidney dialysis and many more.

Biomedical Engineering is a broad field with different areas of focus, and the exact nature of the work you can find yourself doing will vary depending on the specifics of your role. A few examples of some of the subdivisions of Biomedical Engineering include; Biomechanics, Biomedical Electronics, Biomaterials, Computational Biology, Medical Imaging, Orthopedic Bioengineering, Bio Nanotechnology, Cellular, Tissue and Genetic Engineering. In the light of emerging trends, Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering was launched in Fall 2019 with PEC Approval and launching MS Biomedical Engineering after the NOC received from HEC for Fall 2020.

The department has well-established and well-equipped laboratories to be utilized for the education of student of Biomedical Engineering. Laboratories cover various field of engineering like, electronics, computing, physics, medicine, chemistry and core biomedical engineering. The facility of labs, available for the students to conduct experiments and learn implementation of complex engineering problems, are of Biomedical Instrumentation Lab, Modeling and Simulation Lab, Biomedical Signal Processing Lab, Physiology Lab, Human Anatomy Lab, Biochemistry Lab, Physics Lab, Computing Lab, Basic and Biomedical Electronics Lab and Embedded Systems Lab. For biomedical engineers observing, understanding and troubleshooting the hospital equipment is the core subject and for that there is a collaboration with the PAF Hospital, Islamabad. PAF Hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and a very efficient Biomedical Department. This not only gives students the chance to visit hospital regarding their academic purpose but also creates an opportunity for them to explore internship possibilities. There is also a very strong affiliation with the Fazaia Medical College (FMC), that creates tremendous opportunities for inter- departmental research collaboration and also aids in the pool of biology related knowledge and practical work. The facility of library is also available for the students and faculty of Biomedical Engineering.

Biomedical Engineering department is being established with faculty and staff having professional degrees of PhD, Masters and Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering. The faculty’s aim is to educate students with core and advanced level courses of Biomedical Engineering on a graduate level and also make them capable of designing and solving complex engineering problems. They are also trained to inculcate research skills in students, along with carrying out research independently and with their colleagues in team.

Mission of Biomedical Engineering: To provide students with advanced engineering knowledge and nurture them with the positive relationship towards their fellow and in particular towards society. The Department aspires to produce graduates who can communicate effectively, seek lifelong learning and contribute towards developing a prosperous and enlightened society.
