Salient Features of Department of Physics

Department of Physics is one of the rapidly growing department in the Air University with an outstanding reputation for excellence in research, undergraduate education and postgraduate training. Department launched its first-degree program MS in Applied Physics in Fall 2013. Later, in 2015, department has started BS and PhD programs in Physics, which are successfully running. Currently, the enrolled students in BS are 250, 103 students are in MS and 29 are registered as a PhD student. So far, 07 MS and 05 BS batches have been successfully completed their respective degree programs.

The department has fifteen faculty members plus a number of visiting faculty members. Classroom teaching loads are held to a level that encourages excellence in teaching and research and allows students to receive a maximum of attention. The research interests of the faculty span the range from the most traditional areas in physics to the newest and most innovative. We have different research groups working in the field of materials science including composites, semiconductors, nanoparticles, and biomaterials. While, in theoretical physics, we have research groups working in the field of non-linear dynamics, high-energy physics, and plasma physics. Many faculty members in Physics department are internationally recognized in their fields of research specialization. That research is supported in part by competitively awarded national and international research grants, which exceed ~75 million PKR over the last 3 years. Based on the faculty profile, we are at No. 5 among the Physics departments in the country, as per Pakistan Council for Science and Technology, Pakistan.

Our students in physics find support through our world class faculty and high-tech facilities. Research-led teaching is embedded at all levels from first year laboratory reports to our final year MS individual research projects. The UG laboratories are fully equipped with conventional and latest equipment for carrying out undergraduate experiments. In addition to UG laboratories, department has also established PG research laboratories, which are equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment and computational facilities.
